Houseplants - Plants We Love

The Benefits of Houseplants

From a nursery owner’s perspective, as well as from a personal one, I find plants to be an incredible source of joy and comfort. Even at my stage of the game, in my profession, I’m constantly learning about not only new plants, but also new ways to use old ones. For example, I have long known the benefits of using rosemary in preparing favorite dinner dishes, but lately I’ve been steeping rosemary with blueberries and lemon slices for a morning cup of tea, especially if I wake bloated and gassy. Rosemary has antispasmodic, antiseptic, carminative and anti-inflammatory properties. But, enough about me and my issues … lets look at you and why you should add more plants into your life!

Whether you’re looking to purify the air or aid in digestion, plants provide a plethora of natural solutions. From seasonal relief to overall health benefits, there are so many reasons to have them in your home space.

Seasonal Relief

Houseplants have the ability to provide seasonal relief indoors, through:

  • Air Purification
  • Allergy Protection
  • Moisture Addition
  • Mood Boosting

During the photosynthesis process, carbon dioxide is absorbed and oxygen is released into the atmosphere. Plants literally oxygenate your space! Many houseplants, like English Ivy, Asparagus Ferns, Philodendrons, and Dracaena are also able to filter air pollutants from harsh cleaners, paints, printers, etc. Known as air-scrubbers, these species protect your skin and eyes from irritation. By purifying the air, airborne particles and allergens are reduced, decreasing the chances of mold and dust, while allowing you to breathe easier. Low-light Chinese Evergreens, Peace Lilies, and African Violets are beautiful options for flowering indoor plants that filter the air and bloom through the Winter months; the pollen from their flowers are stickier and heavier than most, preventing it from floating around in the air.

When the harsh temperatures of the summer and winter months hit, our air conditioners and heaters cause the humidity inside to fluctuate. More often than not, this can cause skin irritation and even heighten your chances of getting sick. To prevent this from happening, species like Spider plants can increase the moisture in the air. They also produce small white flowers year round; brightening the space and lifting moods. Lipstick plants are another beneficial plant that also flowers. For plants that don’t add humidity naturally but benefit from the extra moisture, you can place a saucer with water and gravel rock near or under. Having plants to improve the air quality and add beauty? What more can you ask for!

Health Benefits

There are a number of health benefits to having houseplants in your indoor space, including:

  • Digestion
  • Relaxation
  • First-Aid
  • Sleep

For generations, herbal and Indigenous medicines have used natural remedies for various ailments. Perennials like Calendula, Echinacea, Yarrow, and Chamomile are known for their medicinal properties and immune system support. Simply steep the flowers in boiling water and drink as a tea to receive the benefits. Aloe Vera succulents are another species that have been traditionally used to treat diseases and scars. People with psoriasis, acne, and burns (from both heat and sun exposure) can utilize its healing abilities by applying the gel directly with the skin. For internal help, it’s said that consuming the juice can provide constipation relief. Traditionally, these forms of aid have been an effective substitution for artificial supplements.
